NKD  Children's House Dornbirn
Mainimage

The design attempts to spatialize the demanding task of a new district center, consisting of a children's house, a gymnasium and an event house, by means of contextually coherent yet heterogeneous structures on a multi-layered topography.

The new district center is completed by a square and a trapezoidal structure with sloping green roofs, which take up and continue the topographical theme of the surrounding plaza.

The club house is positioned in the middle and divides the outside areas around it. Without a back, it is oriented in all directions and thus clarifies the various qualities of the open spaces. The grandstand function of the stairs in the school yard can be better used by the adjacent building and solves the problem of the necessary artificial barrier. The staircase frames the base of the club house, integrates the access to the underground car park and increases visibility along Haselstauderstraße. By moving the building back slightly, the village square can also be seen from the street. The main entrance of the event house is on the north side of the building. The location of the hall in combination with the village square in front enables events to be extended outside.

The trapezoidal structure of the children's home acts like a fitting piece in the context. It separates the garden of the children's home from the village square, accompanies the pedestrian path along the cemetery wall and extends the axes of the elementary school. The sloping roof is based on the eaves of the elementary school, rises with the site and creates open spaces where it is possible to relax with the children outside, away from the garden. A generous atrium in the area of the centrally located stairs also ensures daylight in the core of the building.

The connection for the children to the gymnasium located in the basement is made via a staircase from the children's house, with the existing access from the elementary school being connected.
The underground car park can be reached from the public staircase, which is accessible from the village square.

Construction and Materiality

The square surface of the school yard will also be used in the village square. The roof areas are partly intensively greened, especially in the children's house, and partly extensively. Two areas in tartan are being considered on the roof of the children's home.

The two structures primarily consist of exposed concrete, wood and glass. The children's house is designed as a timber construction and the event house in reinforced concrete.

The material concept for the interiors provides for solid surfaces made of wood and textile as well as mineral materials such as concrete or clay; a color concept for the surfaces can be developed together with the children and the educators.
